Our approach takes inspiration from Gartner’s concept of ‘bimodal’, which they coined a little while ago now. It’s defined as “the practice of managing two separate but coherent styles of work: one focused on predictability; the other on exploration.”
In the context of IT, the first of these styles focuses on core systems, ‘business as usual’ activities, ‘oxygen’ purchases (the things that you need to keep operating) and making the most of what you have, or improving efficiency.
The second focuses more on the transformational, new and inventive ideas and technologies to solve problems for the future, or innovation.
According to Gartner, “both modes are essential to create substantial value and drive significant organisational change” and “play an essential role in digital transformation”.
This operating model still feels a long way off for most people – but not our customers!
